Rez Soheil

Rez Soheil is a prominent figure in the world of deep technical diving, particularly renowned for his extensive exploration of wrecks off the Irish coast, specifically around Donegal and Malin Head. He is often referred to as a “Guru of Irish Technical Diving” due to his profound knowledge and experience in this challenging field.

Soheil’s diving career is marked by a dedication to researching and exploring numerous historical shipwrecks. He frequently dives with a close-knit group of fellow enthusiasts, often taking the lead in organizing expeditions to these deep-water sites. His expertise extends to the use of Closed Circuit Rebreathers (CCRs), as evidenced by his role as a rEvo CCR instructor for the UK and Ireland. This specialized equipment is crucial for technical diving, allowing for extended bottom times and optimized gas consumption, essential for deep and complex wreck penetrations.

One of Soheil’s most significant accomplishments is the recovery of the lost bridge telegraph from the RMS Lusitania.

This historic ocean liner, sunk by a German U-boat in 1915, rests off the west Cork coast. A previous attempt to raise the telegraph had failed, with a lifting bag puncturing and the artifact falling back to the seabed. Soheil, along with his team, successfully located and recovered the telegraph, which was reported to be in excellent condition. This recovery was a notable event, as the Lusitania wreck is considered a protected war grave under Ireland’s National Monuments Acts. The recovered telegraph, along with other artifacts, was intended for display in a local museum, contributing to the preservation of maritime history.

Soheil’s deep dives include explorations of various wrecks, such as the HMS Viknor off Donegal. These dives often involve meticulous planning and execution due to their depth and the inherent risks of technical diving. His commitment to the sport is further highlighted by his involvement in “Project 17” with Rockcorry Divers. This ambitious eight-year undertaking involved ten diving expeditions aimed at documenting and photographing numerous wrecks. As a co-founder of Rockcorry Divers and North Coast Search & Recovery, Soheil has played a pivotal role in these efforts, including the relocation of the Lusitania’s Davit to The Lusitania Museum in Kinsale in 2019.

Beyond his diving expeditions, Rez Soheil has a professional association with Gas Technologies Ltd.

He has successfully completed the official rEvo service center training program, indicating his technical proficiency with rebreather systems. Gas Technologies itself is deeply rooted in the diving community, having been founded out of a passion for deep-water technical CCR diving. The company focuses on providing competitively priced, reliable high-pressure breathing air compressors to divers across the UK and Ireland, aiming to offer independence from reliance on dive clubs for gas fills. Soheil’s role within Gas Technologies likely involves his expertise in rebreather systems, given his instructor status and training.
